6.1 quake shakes Indonesia yet again; no tsunami warning

After the tsunami scare on Apr 11 in Indonesia, following a massive earthquake, yet another quake struck off Indonesia's Sumatra island on Saturday. According to reports by the US Geological Survey, the earthquake measured 6.1 in the richter scale. No tsunami warning was issued.

The quake struck at 5:14 am (2314 GMT Friday) at a deapth of about 34 kilometres (21 miles), 427 kilometres southwest of Banda Aceh on the northern tip of Sumatra.

Banda Aceh province is subject to frequent earthquakes due to its seismically active location. Indonesia sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", where the meeting of continental plates causes strong seismic activity including earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Earlier, Aceh had been severely hit when a 9.1 magnitude quake hit Sumatra in December 2004 following a huge tsunami which claimed more than 200,000 lives around the Indian ocean.
